Shirt Watching.
A forthcoming self-published photobook, 2026. Shirt watching is an investigation, born out of boredom. The images shown in this book have been taken between 2023 and the present, and the investigation still seems to be active. These images have been taken in an around train journeys to and from three places, London, Birmingham and Essex, each of these trains always packed with commuters on their to or from work, in their suits, to relieve the boredom of these journeys, I would sit and tally the colours of shirts noticing patterns and themes throughout the attire of those heading to work, my habit of shirt watching felt entirely out of place, within a train carriage of corporate workers sat on laptops cramming in work on their journey.
My entire approach to these works, felt out of pace with the city, I felt myself beginning to resist the cities pace, the pace of work, tourism, shopping to use the city at my own speed. The images made in this time frame, found me I didn’t not find them, my only aim was to walk, away from the crowd, this was the condition of my investigation. This practice unlocked the city in an entirely new way, the nauseating mania of London’s rush hour was undone by walking home, often on the quietest route possible, Birmingham’s movement away from crowds often took me to parks and green spaces, at random times of the day, and in Essex I tried my best to move away from the commuters, finding quiet corners and forcing myself into the countryside.
I made images sparingly, and to me each one told a story, they can be used on your conditions, and can be interpreted however you decide, they are just scenes that presented themselves to me in my walks, investigating the ways in which I can resist the pressure of crowds and the speed of the city.
